Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly has elected a new vice president. Muslim-based party leader Hamzah Haz will join President Megawati Sukarnoputri in governing Indonesia until 2004. It was a 1)tight race involving several rounds of voting.
Legislators applauded Thursday as Indonesia's Assembly speaker announced Hamzah Haz as the new vice president.
It was a tight race. With five candidates originally in the running, Mr. Haz was elected a day later than expected. Late Wednesday, the assembly called a second-run off vote between Mr. Haz and Akbar Tanjung - his 2)competition from the former ruling Golkar political party.
Haz, 61, is the leader of the 3)conservative Muslim "United Development Party." He resigned from the Cabinet of former President Abdurrahman Wahid in 1999 because of 4)allegations of 5)corruption 2.
Analysts 3 say the election of Mr. Haz may help swing support more behind President Megawati Sukarnoputri. Members of Mr. Haz's party were among some of the more conservative lawmakers who had objected to having a woman president when Ms. Megawati made a leadership 6)bid in 1999.
The assembly elevated Ms. Megawati from the position of vice president to president on Monday to replace Abdurrahman Wahid, who was 7)dismissed for alleged 4 corruption and 8) mismanagement.
