[00:04.74]In France there lived a great general whose name was Napoleon Bonaparte.
[00:11.53]He was the leader of the French army;
[00:13.51]and France was at war with nearly all the countries around.
[00:17.77]In the April of 1796, he wanted very much to take his soldiers into Italy;
[00:24.01]but between France and Italy there are high mountains called the Alps,
[00:28.39]the tops of which are covered with snow.
[00:31.00]“Is it possible to cross the Alps?”asked Napoleon.
[00:34.81]The men who had been sent to look at the passes? over the mountains shook their heads.

[00:44.88]“Let me hear no more,”said Napoleon.“Forward? to Italy!”
[00:48.51]People laughed at the thought of an army of sixty thousand men crossing the Alps where there was no road.
[00:54.74]But Napoleon waited to see that everything was in good order,
[00:58.23]and then he gave the order to march.
