 Clip:“剪、夹、快”的绕口令


先提个醒儿,若您现在思维不甚敏捷,千万别看下面这句话,否则,您一定要说我“落井下石”,把本就不大清醒的大脑折腾的更不知东西。不相信?那就试一试——Please use your clipper to clip this article on clipper ships from the paper; then clip it to that file and take it to the editor at a good clip. 呵!没晕吧?若您真的不幸被我言中了,千万别慌张。相信下面的讲解,能够重还您一片“清醒”蓝天——句中的三个clip,分别表示“剪切”、“用……夹牢”、“快速地”。 Clip的“剪切”意源于古挪威语klippa,带有强烈的拟声意味,有点像剪刀剪东西时的“咔嚓”声。在此基础上,clip可以表示“修剪”,如clip a hedge(修剪篱笆);表示“削减”,如clip the budget(削减预算);其相应的名词形式clipper可用来指代“剪刀”。 到了19世纪,clip开始用来形容“迅速离开”,语言学家认为这层涵义依然源于其“剪切”意,因为剪刀剪切东西时动作确实“短而快”。正因于此,我们在现代英语中可找到短语at a good/fast/rapid clip(迅速地、快速地);而其相应名词形式clipper则可用来指代“快速帆船”。 Clip的第三层意思“用……夹牢”则源于古英语clyppan,表示fasten(夹牢;钉牢),所以,clip除作动词外,还可作名词,表示“夹子,回形针,胸针”。 讲到这儿,我们刚才那句有点绕圈圈的话似乎也该“云开雾散”了——“请用剪刀把报纸上那篇有关快船的文章剪下来,然后把剪下的文章夹在夹子里,赶快给编辑送去。”是不是这个意思?
