This is Istanbul’s Istikal Jacuzzi; it’s the main pedestrian thoroughfare in the city and as you can see the riot police are out in force, skirmishing with demonstrators and firing tear gas. A group called The Taksim Solidarity 2 Platform had organized the protest were planing to go to Istanbul Central Gezi Park, which has been the focus of nearly a month of unrest in Turkey. A court has ruled for the government to stop its plans.

So this is a skirmish underway for about an hour now. Police have cordoned 3 off Istanbul Central Taksim Square, while refusing to allow, Turkish government officials say, demonstrators to gather in Istanbul Central Gezi Park. And as you can hear, demon 1 stators, pretty angry.
The riot police had been using water cannons 4 and tear gas. And that's Turkish government official have said, they will not allow this square to be used by protestors; they insist the park at the center of this unrest, will be opened to the public within a matter of days.
