[00:53.76] What happened? We used to be able to drink the water in rivers and lakes.

[02:11.34]ARE WE ENDANGERED 4

[02:14.69]Steve Jones is an environmental 5 expert

[02:19.52]who tries to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered.

[02:25.08]"We are not alone in the world.

[02:28.74]We human beings could not survive without all the plants and animals around us.

[02:35.30]We often talk about how important it is to take good care of ourselves and our planet 6,

[02:42.14]but we don't always do as we say,"

[02:46.30]Steve says as he takes us on a tour of  Green Park in Birmingham.

[02:52.04]Many of the earth's plants and animals have already died out,

[02:57.71]and several other species 7 are endangered.

[03:01.97]If we want to live a better life and have a bright future,

[03:06.83]we must learn to act in ways that do not harm other living things.

[03:13.07]If we know more about what causes endangerment 8,

[03:17.75]we may be able to take measures before it is too late.

[03:23.00]A species can become endangered for different reasons.

[03:28.17]Animals and plants must have a habitat 9,or home, which is comfortable and clean,

[03:35.82]and where there is enough food and other resources 10.

[03:40.87]They are all used to their environment;

[03:44.71]that is,they have learnt how to live successfully 11 in their habitat.

[03:50.77]When the habitat of a species is changed or destroyed,

[03:56.33]the animal or plant has to either adapt to the change or find a new home.

[04:03.30]If this is not possible, the species becomes endangered.

[04:08.95]If a new species arrives, the animals and plants of the habitat must change again.

[04:16.10]If the new species is too strong or uses too much of the resources in the hatitat,

[04:23.55]some of the original species may become endangered.

[04:27.70]A species may also die out

[04:31.96]if humans or other animals use too much of a plant or kill too many animals.

[04:39.54]The good news is that there is a lot we can do to help.

[04:45.18]First of all,we need to learn more about animals, plants and the environment.

[04:52.02]Experts tell us that we need to think about what we can do

[04:57.80]to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered.

[05:02.55]Steve says that we can help by creating more space for animals and plants:

[05:09.39]"You can plant a tree or build a birdhouse.

[05:13.84]It is simple but useful."

[05:17.91]Steve also wants us to think about what we do:

[05:22.59]"Please don't pollute the environment.

[05:26.24]If we find out more about what we should do,

[05:30.40]we can help Steve and others like him keep animals and plants

[05:36.33]and ourselves--from becoming endangered

[06:09.32]Human beings often throw away things they have used only once.
