A 1)deputy of 2)accused terrorist 3)mastermind Osama bin Laden has denied claims the Saudi militant 3 granted an interview to an Arab reporter that included threats against U.S. and Israeli targets.
The denial comes as U.S. troops in the Gulf 4 remain on 4)alert in response to what officials have described as a "credible 5 terrorist threat."
The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press quotes bin Laden deputy Abou Hafs as saying Mr. bin Laden has not spoken to the Arabic television channel, MBC, or any other media 5)outlet. He said whatever MBC has reported about Mr. bin Laden is wrong and a lie.
Saturday, an MBC television 6)correspondent said he met with Mr. bin Laden at an undisclosed location in Afghanistan. He said bin Laden's forces appeared to be mobilizing and he quoted bin Laden associates as saying the coming weeks will hold important surprises, targeting Israeli and American interests in the world.
The Afghan Islamic Press quotes the bin Laden deputy as saying the MBC reporter did meet Mr. bin Laden, but only as a guest. Mr. Hafs said the reporter never interviewed Saudi militant or his key associate, Ayman Zawaheri Al-Misri.
Sunday, Afghanistan's Taleban rulers also denied reports that the Saudi militant is planning any attacks on U.S. or Israeli 7)targets.
A Taleban spokesman said Mr. bin Laden's activities are "under control" in Afghanistan and that he has no possibility of launching attacks against any country.
The Taleban is facing U.N. sanctions for refusing to 8)hand over Mr. bin Laden, who is wanted by the United States in connection with the bombings of two U.S. 9)embassies in Africa.
The MBC report Saturday came two days after the United States put its forces in the gulf on alert, 10)citing a credible terrorist threat. U.S. authorities have not specified 6 the threat, but said it was linked to Mr. bin Laden.
