Going up quickly, like a rocket





Helen:
Hello, this is Real English from BBC Learning 1 English. I’m Helen.


Zoë: 你好吗? 我是刘佳。


Helen: Today we’re going to look at words and phrases that have recently become part of the English language.


Zoë: 地道英语将及时带大家更新英语中的流行表达和新词汇。Helen, 我们今天要学的新词是?


Helen: Today’s new word is ‘rocket’ – R.O.C.K.E.T. – rocket.


Zoë: Rocket. 这是什么意思啊?


Helen: Well, rocket is not a new word in English but it does have a new meaning here.


Zoë: 啊? 老词新意?那老词是什么,新意又是什么?


Helen: I’ll explain – a rocket is either a spaceship or a missile 2.


Zoë: Rocket 是太空飞船,或者导弹的意思. 那Helen,它的新意思又是什么呢?


 


Helen: Well, rocket can also be a verb and is often used in business. It means to go up quickly and suddenly, like a rocket.


Zoë: 哦, rocket还有快速上升的意思, 就象是一艘火箭一样。 How do we use it, Helen?


Helen: Well, you might use it in business. You could say 'Sales have rocketed this month.'


Zoë: ’销售量这个月有了显著的提升。 这么说,这是个形容好事儿的词了? So it's a good thing?


Helen: Well, it depends what you are talking about, but generally it’s a good thing.

A: Do people speak English in China?


B: Well, the number of English speakers has rocketed in recent years, but not so many people speak the language in the countryside.


C: How’s work?


D: Great. Since I got promoted my salary has rocketed. I’m making loads of money these days.
