 俚语:能说会道


看着书桌上的一整套英文词典,我彻底晕了……只有上帝才知道我为什么会买……那个小眼睛推销员实在是“能说会道”,他所说的每一句话都让我觉得,不买词典的人都是白痴!Oh my god!
不过,既然买了,那就好好利用吧!这不,刚巧翻到“gift of gab 1(能说会道)”这个俚语。看来,真应了“书中自有黄金屋”这句老话。 “Gift of gab”最早可追溯到中古世纪,可能由荷兰语“gabbelen”和盖尔语“gob”演变而来。在中古时代的荷兰语中,“gabbelen”表示“喋喋不休、絮絮叨叨”的意思。而在盖尔语(一些苏格兰人和爱尔兰人使用的语言)中,“gob”则表示“mouth (嘴巴)”。慢慢地,“gob”演变成了“gab(belen)”,指“饶舌,唠叨”,而“gift of gab”则表示“能说会道”,尤指某人有很强的说服能力。 来看下面的例句:Xiao Wang was born to have the gift of gab. His parents are all lawyers。(小王的父母都是律师,他天生就能说会道、很有说服力)
