Authorities warned 9,000 people could be in danger as tropical cyclone 1 Ita hurtles towards the far north Queensland coast. The category 5 system is stronger than cyclone Yasi which caused widespread devastation 2 back in 2011. Now the system expects to make landfall this afternoon, somewhere between Cape 3 Melville and Cook Town.
Police fear a three-year-girl who went missing from her home near Bangdaburg in southern Queensland may have been abducted 4. Chloe Campbell went missing from her family home in Childers between mid-night and six yesterday morning. She was last seen wearing yellow pants and a white shirt.
An Australian orion aircraft has detected another signal that could be from the missing Malaysian Airline plane's black box recorder. Retired 5 Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston says the accoustic data will need further analysis, but the new signal appears to be from a man-made source.
The Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says some asylum-seekers could be temporarily re-settled on Nauru if they are found to be refugees. Nauru finalized 6 about 60 asylum-seeker claims within a month. Mr. Morrison says he's also in talks with Cambodia as a potential re-settlement location.
And hundreds of people gathered in Brisbane overnight in memory of the murdered French student Sophie Collumbay. The 21-year-old's body was found in a Brisbane park two weeks ago. Crowds packed Brisbane's King George Square before marching to that park for a candlelight vigil.
