Chinese authorities are planning to survey the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea as part of a program to map its territorial 1 islands and reefs.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry 2 spokesperson said the move is aimed to "safeguard China's marine 3 rights".
The first stage of the island surveying and mapping was launched in 2009.
Work to monitor islands located within 100 km of the coastline has been completed, according to a document from the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation.
The second stage will cover islands including the Diaoyu Islands.
Relations between the two East Asian neighbors have plunged 4 since the Japanese government purchased some of the Diaoyu Islands from their private owner last September.
