The US is calling on the DPRK to release an 85-year-old American citizen who’s been detained in the country for more than a month.
Retired 1 finance executive Merrill Newman fought in the Korean War 60 years ago. He was taken off a plane on October 26th by DPRK authorities as he was about to leave the country, following a 10-day visit. A US National Security Council spokesperson called for Newman’s immediate 2 release and for him to be reunited with his family, citing his age and health. A US state department official says Swedish diplomats 3 in Pyongyang have visited Newman.
There are reports that the Korean War veteran apologized for his wartime activities during his visit in the DPRK.
