2009年的一部3D大片《阿凡达》让很多人都记住了avatar这个词。在网络上搜索这个词，出来的结果大部分也都跟这部电影有关。其实，avatar并不是导演造的一个词，它在印度教中指“圣人的化身”。到了网络无处不在的今天，avatar又有了一个新的意思——个人头像。
An avatar is the graphical representation of the user or the user's alter ego 1 or character. It may take either a three-dimensional form, as in games or virtual worlds, or a two-dimensional form as an icon 2 in Internet forums 3 and other online communities. It is an object representing the user.

The use of the term avatar for the on-screen representation of the user was coined in 1985 by Chip Morningstar and Joseph Romero in designing LucasFilm's online role-playing game Habitat, coming from the term’s original meaning of “a descent of the Supreme 4 Being” in Hinduism, translated as " incarnation " or "manifestation 5" in English.
