The US and South Korea had been planning to deploy 1 the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (Thaad) system by the end of the year, but they said that installation had started on Monday after North Korea fired four ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan.

Washington insists the system is aimed solely 10 at defending South Korea and Japan, but China views the Thaad system as a threat to its own ballistic missiles and warned that it would be forced to respond to “secure our own security interests”.
