Israel broke off peace talks with the Palestinians Thursday, in protest against a reconciliation 1 agreement between the Western-backed Palestinian Authority and the militant 2 group Hamas, the Jewish state’s sworn enemy.
Israel’s Security Cabinet made the decision during a marathon emergency meeting convened 3 to discuss the new Palestinian deal. In a statement issued by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, the government said it would not hold negotiations 4 with a government that "leans on Hamas." The rival Palestinian factions 5 Hamas and Fatah announced the reconciliation plan Wednesday, meant to end a seven-year rift 6.
Israel objects to any participation 7 in Palestinian politics by Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings and other attacks over the past two decades.
