Iraqi security forces have arrested a prominent Sunni Muslim lawmaker and supporter of anti-government protests in a deadly raid on his home in the western province of Anbar. According to police, at least five people were killed.
Ahmed al-Alwani belongs to the Sunni-backed opposition 1 coalition 2, known as the Iraqi National Movement, and has been a strong critic of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shiite-led government.
His violent arrest is likely to inflame 3 tensions in Sunni-dominated Anbar, where protesters have been demonstrating against what they see as their sect 4 being marginalised.
Police say a two-hour firefight broke out when bodyguards 5 and members of Alwani's tribe resisted police and soldiers who went to arrest Alwani on charges of "terrorism". They say those killed in the fighting included three of Alwani's bodyguards, his sister and his brother.
