The Japanese cabinet is scheduled to approve three security-related documents, to bolster 1 its military forces and raise its profile.
The new mid-term defense 2 strategy guidelines include a budget of 240 billion US dollars, with provisions made for five years from April 2014. The program stipulates 3 that considering the situation of the Diaoyu Islands, the military deployment 4 over the country’s southwestern islands will be strengthened. A longer National Defense Program Outline lays out policies and strategies for the next decade. And the first-ever National Security Strategy calls for the abolishment of Japan’s "three principles" on arms exports.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the documents marked a "historic move". Some analysts 5 say the three documents are actually targeted at China.
