China's manned submersible Jiaolong is now ready to start a deep-sea dive at seamount area in the South China Sea and carry out observation. It comes after an error occurred Thursday on its positioning system.
The tasks for the dive on Friday include checking the submersible’s operating condition at a depth of 4,000 meters, testing its positioning system, surveying underwater terrain 1 and taking samples from the bottom of the sea.
On Wednesday, the headquarters of Jiaolong, as well as scientists aboard its support ship, named a seamount to be explored.
The submersible Jiaolong completed four deep-sea dives from June 17 to 20, collecting rare animal specimens 2 and mineral samples. The 113-day mission marks the start of a five-year trial period for the Jiaolong before it starts regular operation.
