The Communist Party’s discipline watchdog is cracking down on corruption 2. Compared with the previous year, the commission received more public tipoffs and disciplined more high level officials.

"In 2013, anti-graft watchdogs nationwide had received 1.95 million tip-offs from the public. 31 high-level officials, some at ministerial level, were either punished or are subject to ongoing 3 investigations 4." Huang Shuxian, vice 5 secretary of CPC Central Commission For Discipline Inspection 6, said.

The agency told reporters nearly 180 thousand officials were disciplined in 2013 -- that’s about 20 thousand more than the year before. Corrupt 1 officials are finding it harder to use their position as shields. Even senior officials from government ministries 7 may come under fire once there’s reason for suspicion, such prominent falls include former officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, the State Owned Assets Supervision 8 and Administration Commission, as well as the Ministry 9 of Public Security. Since China’s new leadership took office, a stress on cleaner governance has been made.

"Some 30 thousand CPC officials were disciplined last year for going against the frugality 10 practice. A reporting channel was set up on the official website, exposing typical cases to the public. This is to convey the message, that misconduct will be severely 11 punished." Huang said.
