Top 5 Countdown for Week Ending Nov. 16

We’re rolling out the five most popular songs in the Billboard 1 Magazine Hot 100 pop singles chart, for the week ending November 16, 2013.

History is made in this week’s Top Five, with one newcomer matching a 49-year-old chart record.

Let’s get started in fifth place, where Avicii steps back a slot to number five with “Wake Me Up!” The 24-year-old Swedish DJ - real name Tim Bergling - says his manager got him interested in contemporary folk music. He says he incorporated it into his True album because nobody else was doing it - and it’s worked: “Wake Me Up!” has gone gold, platinum 2, or multi-platinum in 11 countries worldwide.

Dipping two notches 4 to fourth place, it's Katy Perry with “Roar.” Katy made out well at the November 10 MTV Europe Music Awards in Amsterdam where she took Best Female honors.

Winning both the Best Hip-Hop and Global Icon 5 trophies 6 was Eminem, and what a week he had on the Hot 100 chart.

Eminem re-teams with Rihanna as “The Monster” debuts 7 at number three - you probably remember their 2010 super-hit “Love The Way You Lie.” This is one of four Eminem singles in this week’s Top 20 list. No lead artist has placed this many songs in the Top 20 since April, 1964, when The Beatles had six…that’s 49 years!

The rest of the countdown may seem like an anti-climax, but we’ll soldier on. As expected, Miley Cyrus caused a stir at the MTV Europe Music Awards, and here in the Top 20, “Wrecking Ball” regains 8 a notch 3 in second place. On Sunday, Miley turned up in Amsterdam at the MTV Europe Music Awards - “Wrecking Ball” took the Best Video trophy 9, while Miley lit up a suspicious-looking cigarette onstage. And yes, she also twerked.

Up at number one, it’s all the same: Lorde spends a sixth week atop the Hot 100 pop singles chart with “Royals.”

Lorde appears in the upcoming soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Catching 10 Fire, singing Tears For Fears’ hit “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.” It ruled the Hot 100 chart in June, 1985…11 years before she was born.

Can Lorde make it a lucky seventh week at number one? Join us in seven days and we’ll find out.
