Senior police officials say forces are ready to ensure security ahead of a meeting of Indonesia's highest 6)legislative 2 body - the People's Consultative Assembly - scheduled for August 1 to consider impeaching 3 President Abdurrahman Wahid. Forces have even drawn 4 up evacuation plans as a 7)precaution.
Assembly speaker Amien Rais says violence will not be 8)tolerated. He says anyone looking for trouble will be met by security officers.
Abdurrahman Wahid The political showdown between the 9)unpopular president and his legislative critics could come as soon as Friday. That is the day Mr. Wahid has set as a deadline for Parliament to drop impeachment efforts or face 10)dissolution and a state of civil emergency.
But it is not clear if the president can carry out his threat since police and military leaders have said they will not support such an action.
Legislators too are standing 5 firm. They have 11)denounced the president's threat and are prepared to convene 6 within hours to begin impeachment 12)proceedings should Mr. Wahid attempt to act against Parliament before August 1st.
President Wahid's troubles began in February, when a team of parliamentary investigators 7 determined 8 he was probably involved in corruption 9. The president has been 13)censured twice for corruption and mismanagement.
Mr. Wahid however denies all charges of wrongdoing. He says Parliament is violating the law by trying to 14)unseat him.
