Israeli helicopters have attacked a building in the West Bank town of Bethlehem. Palestinian sources say four people were killed, including two wanted members of the Islamic militant 1 group Hamas.
A number of other individuals were wounded in the attack, about 10 kilometers south of Jerusalem.
An Israeli military source said the target was a 1)wanted Hamas 2)commander who was planning a mass attack in Israel, possibly against the Jewish sports competition known as the Maccabiah Games.
This is the latest in a series of 3)assaults by Israel against militants suspected of planning attacks against Israeli targets. Palestinians call them 4)assassinations, but Israel describes them as self-defense. A military source said these actions would not be necessary if Palestinian security officials were arresting 5)terrorists.
Samir Hazboun, a senior official in Yasser Arafat's Fatah 6)faction was a witness to the attack. "It seems this reflects a fact of horror in our area," he said. "High tension is 7)prevailing in Bethlehem in general. The situation is incredible."
The dead activists 3 were 8)identified as Omar Saadeh and Taha al-Aruj. The other victims were relatives, Mohammed Saadeh and Issak Saadeh.
The attack came one day after a Palestinian suicide bomber 4 killed two Israeli soldiers in the northern Israeli city of Binyamina. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack.
