Ousted 1 Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid says he plans to leave the country for the United States. The decision comes after Mr. Wahid was forced from power Monday, and Megawati Sukarnoputri 1)assumed the 2)presidency 2.
Mr. Wahid says he will leave the Presidential Palace in the Indonesian capital and go to the United States for a medical 3)check-up. The former leader was forced out of power by Indonesia's highest 4)legislative body, the People's Consultative Assembly on Monday. But Mr. Wahid said he did not recognize the authority of the Assembly to remove his 5)mandate and he refused to leave the presidential palace.
Now, Mr. Wahid says he will seek treatment at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, because his doctors are afraid he may have another stroke. The 61 year-old former leader has had two strokes and suffers from diabetes 3. Associates of Mr. Wahid say he still believes the Assembly violated the Constitution by removing him from power. But he will not launch a formal challenge against the Megawati government.
The elevation 4 of Ms. Megawati to the presidency comes after months of political 6)wrangling. Lawmakers launched the 7)impeachment 5 process against Mr. Wahid in February - because of corruption 6 allegations. Although Mr. Wahid was cleared of corruption charges by the Attorney General, lawmakers pushed ahead with impeachment 8)proceedings on the ground he was 9)incompetent.
The Assembly is now meeting to elect a new Vice 7 President who will work with President Megawati for the remainder of Mr. Wahid's original term, scheduled to end in 2004. After a 10)preliminary round of voting, three 11)candidates remain: Muslim party leader Hamzah Haz, parliament speaker Akbar Tanjung, and former top Security Minister Susilo Bambang.
None of the three belong to Ms. Megawati's party, leading to concerns that, like the Wahid-Megawati alliance, Indonesia's leadership could 12)eventually become divided.
