President Bush has decided 1 to end the 1)controversial Navy bombing exercises on Vieques Island off the 2)coast of Puerto Rico by May 2003.
A senior 3)administration official who did not want to be 4)identified told reporters of Mr. Bush's decision.
The official said the Pentagon would formally announce later Thursday that a search will begin for an 5)alternative to the Vieques bombing range.
Controversy 2 6)erupted over the range when two live bombs went 7)astray in 1999, killing 3 a 8)civilian guard. Since then, protesters have demanded the military leave the site, and the Navy has 9)switched to using 10)dummy bombs.
The Navy has used the range for decades, arguing it is vital to national security because it combines air, sea and land 11)maneuvers.
Politics likely played a role in the President's decision. Hispanics whose support has been important to Mr. Bush have been especially vocal 4 in their opposition 5 to the bombing range.
