Israeli, Palestinian Officials Dead After Gunfire Exchange

An Israeli security officer and a Palestinian man are dead after an exchange of 1)gunfire in an incident that 2)strained a new 3)cease-fire designed to end more than eight-months of bloodshed.
Israeli police say a Palestinian gunman 4)ambushed a vehicle carrying a senior security official, killing 1 the man and wounding at least one other Israeli.
Police say the Palestinian gunman was shot and killed in the exchange of fire, which happened on a road linking Jerusalem with a group of Jewish settlements near the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
Palestinians say the gunman was a collaborator 2 who went to an 5)undercover meeting with his Israeli contacts and opened fire on them.
Those deaths followed a drive-by shooting overnight that killed a Palestinian man when gunmen opened fire on his truck in the West Bank. Israeli media reports say a previously 3 unknown Jewish group 6)claimed responsibility for that attack.
The shootings challenged a cease-fire mediated 4 by Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet.
Despite the violence, Israel began 7)withdrawing tanks and removing 8)checkpoints near the Jewish settlement of Netzarim in the Gaza Strip. Israel also opened the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, and eased restrictions 5 on using the coastal 6 waters off Gaza for Palestinian fishermen.
A spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Raanan Gissen, says Israeli soldiers will withdraw from those areas where the 9)truce 7 is holding, but will continue to remain in places where the clashes are continuing. "In those places where there will be no quiet, and no cease-fire, we will not move," he said. "In other words, our soldiers and our weapons will not be re-deployed and we will continue to be there until such time that the Palestinians will decide to observe the cease-fire."
Under the terms of the cease-fire, Palestinians are reportedly required to 10)apprehend militants 8 involved in planning terrorist attacks, collect illegal weapons including mortars 9, 11)shut down bomb factories, and prevent arms 12)smuggling.
Israel is to ease its closure on the Palestinian territories and pull its soldiers back to points held before the violence 13)erupted more than eight-months ago.
Mr. Tenet began his 14)mediation efforts after a 15)suicide bomber 10 killed 20 Israelis earlier this month in Tel Aviv, raising fears of a significant 16)escalation in the conflict.
The CIA director has played a key role in security discussions between both sides, and was sent to the Middle East by President Bush to work out details of the latest truce.
Both sides agreed to the cease-fire earlier this week.
