Israeli and Palestinian security officials met Friday to discuss a 1)fragile U.S. brokered 1 cease-fire. Both sides are accusing each other of not 2)upholding the terms of truce 2.
The chiefs of the Israeli and Palestinian security services met to discuss the first 48-hours of the cease-fire, and plans to implement 3 requirements of the agreement.
In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said violence and acts of terrorism have not stopped, and he 3)accused the Palestinians of failing to arrest Islamic militants 4. Mr. Sharon said Israel will continue to uphold the cease-fire, but adds it will "differentiate 5 between quiet areas and those where violence is continuing."
The prime minister added if clashes continue, Israel will have no alternative but to "4)foil the attacks and strike at the attackers."
Israeli Defense 6 Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, speaking during a trip to Paris, said Israel will comply with the terms of the agreement. "We will increase the support and we will see," he said. "We have enough time to respond in a different way. We don't want to use that. We are strong enough to say and to 5)declare we don't want to solve the problem through military means."
Israeli tanks have pulled back in several parts of the 6)occupied territories, and the army has eased restrictions 7 on Palestinian commercial traffic and the use of 7)coastal waters off the Gaza Strip.
The military has also reopened crossings connecting the Palestinian territories with Egypt and Jordan. But Palestinians are 8)dismissing the measures as cosmetic 8 as long as movement for the wider population remains 9 restricted by Israeli 9)blockades.
Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said the closure is continuing to "10)suffocate the Palestinians."
Under the terms of the cease-fire, Palestinians are required to 11)apprehend militants involved in terrorist activity, shut down bomb factories, prevent arms 12)smuggling and collect illegal weapons.
Israel must ease its closure on the Palestinian territories and pull its soldiers back to areas held 13)prior to last September when the violence erupted.
The blockade of the West Bank and Gaza Strip has 14)devastated the Palestinian economy and kept more than 100,000 Palestinians from their jobs inside Israel.
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat agreed to the cease-fire hours after a suicide bomber 10 killed 20 Israelis in Tel Aviv earlier this month.
Israel was preparing a major military operation to 15)retaliate for the bombing, but postponed 11 the attack after Mr. Arafat agreed to the truce.
