VIENNA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The world's six major countries in a joint 1 statement on Wednesday urged Iran to suspend its nuclear activities contrary to the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.
The joint statement made by China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States was presented by German ambassador at a closed-door meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s 35-nation board of governors in Vienna on Wednesday.
"We are deeply concerned that Iran continues to undertake certain nuclear activities contrary to the relevant resolutions of the Board of Governors and the UN Security Council," the statement noted 2, showing deep concern that Iran continues to advance its nuclear plan including installing advanced centrifuges, production of enriched uranium, and construction of the IR-40 reactor 3 at Arak, which is supposed to begin commissioning in early 2014.
The six countries, in the context, urged Iran to fully 4 cooperate with IAEA to resolve the outstanding issues in its nuclear program, and suspend its nuclear activities which violate relevant resolutions of UN Security Council and IAEA board of governors.
"We urge once again Iran to comply fully without delay with all of its obligations under the relevant UNSC Resolutions, and to meet the requirements of the Board of Governors," the statement said.
Meanwhile, the major countries show their commitment to the negotiation 5 with Tehran to conclude a long-term solution over this issue, despite 10 rounds of talks between Iran and IAEA failed to make any concrete progress, and the meeting between Tehran and the six countries in April in Almaty showed the two sides remain far apart on the substance as well.
The major countries are "ready for constructive 6 and substantive 7 dialogue with Iran and are looking for a comprehensive and positive response from Iran to their package proposal."
The IAEA's latest report shows that Iran is installing more advanced centrifuges in Natanz nuclear plant, building the IR-40 reactor at Arak, which is presumed by the West to embark 8 on the second path to the nuclear weapon by producing plutonium.
According to the report, the 20 percent enriched uranium possessed 9 by Iran had not exceed 240 kg, the amount which is needed to build a nuclear bomb.
Iran said the report shows the evidence Iran's nuclear program is peaceful, saying that Tehran is not heading to a nuclear bomb.
IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said the talk with Iran was going in circle, showing his frustration 10 and disappointment.
Since the IAEA's demand is beyond Iran's safeguard agreement, both sides need to make a framework, so called structured approach conducting the nuclear inspection 11 in Iran. However, the document has not been finalized 12.
The West accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapon under cover of civilian 13 nuclear program, and imposed a series of sanctions aimed at crippling Iran's economy, while the latter stresses that its nuclear program is for civilian use only.
