Xi Jinping stressed that changes in Taiwan's political landscape cannot change the historical underlying 1 facts or the core connotation of the 1992 Consensus 2.
"To uphold the 1992 Consensus with the one-China principle as the core, maintain peace and stability across the Straits and a peace development of cross-Straits relations, is the mainstream 3 will of compatriots from both the mainland and Taiwan. To ensure national integrity and protect the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation is the common aspiration 4 of all Chinese people."
The one-China principle affirms that both sides of the Straits belong to one and the same China.
As such, Xi Jinping says even the slightest obscurity or wavering will not be allowed when it comes to this cardinal 5 issue of right and wrong.
Xi Jinping also vowed 6 resolute 7 opposition 8 to forces supporting "Taiwan independence" and their separatist activities, so as to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial 9 integrity.
He said both the CPC and the KMT should shoulder greater responsibilities and strengthen their confidence.
"To further achieve the peaceful development of cross-Straits ties, the two parties should consolidate 10 the political foundation of the 1992 Consensus, and continue to promote cooperation in various areas, address actual needs, and seek welfare for compatriots on both sides, and also boost their blood connection."
Hung Hsiu-chu said both parties should continue promoting economic and trade cooperation as well as social and cultural exchanges on the basis of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence."
"We will be duty-bound to solve the issues through communication between the KMT and CPC, and make concerted efforts to bring more well-being 11 to the people."
At the same time, Xi Jinping called for dedication 12 in realizing the great rejuvenation 13 of the Chinese nation, noting that there has been cooperation between the mainland and the island during critical stages, for the benefit of overall national interests.
He said hostility 14 across the Taiwan Straits should come to an end, and a peace agreement should be reached through talks.
Pang 15 Jianguo from Chinese Culture University in Taiwan said the meeting between Xi Jinping and Hung Hsiu-chu might further boost people-to-people exchanges.
"Under the situation whereby the official communication between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan has come to a halt, the meeting between top leaders from both parties expressed welcome to anybody who accepts the 1992 Consensus and opposes 'Taiwan independence.' A bridge between ordinary people from both sides of the Straits could be built to promote communication, though officials will not make any contact."
Xi Jinping notes that In 2005, leaders of the two parties initiated 16 "a shared vision for cross-Straits peaceful development" and pointed 17 the direction for cross-Straits relations.
He says the CPC and KMT, together with people from both sides, embarked 18 on a path of peaceful development of cross-Straits relations since 2008 that has brought practical welfare to compatriots on both sides.
Hung Hsiu-chu arrived in Beijing on Monday afternoon after an initial stopover in Nanjing.
This is the first time that Hung has visited the mainland as the head of the Kuomintang Party.
She is also due to attend the Cross-Straits Peace Forum 19 scheduled to open on Wednesday.
