More than 20,000 homes and businesses were blacked out, and emergency services received more than 2000 calls for help.
In the United States, at least five people have died after a huge storm dumped more than a meter of snow in parts of New York State. Temperatures across the country have prompted to freezing. Residents have been trapped in their homes and cars, and weather has forced many schools to close.
