It’s World Book Day today, and despite the increasing availability of e-books, China still scores low in terms of the the number of books read by an average adult.
A 2013 survey by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication shows that an average Chinese adult reads less than five books a year. That’s more than 10 times lower than Israel, where people read 64 books a year.
The survey shows that Chinese people spend around 13 minutes a day reading, but nearly an hour surfing the internet.
To address the issue, CCTV has launched a campaign on the Twitter-like service Weibo to urge the public to extend their reading time to half an hour per day.
