Political Showdown Looming 1 in Indonesia

A deadline that could lead to the 1)imposition of a state of emergency is fast approaching in Indonesia. Frantic 2 efforts are being made to find a 2)negotiated settlement to the political dispute, but are given little chance of success.
Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid and his opponents continue to play a game of 3)bluff and dare, waiting to see who will 4)blink first.
The mercurial 3 and unpredictable leader of Indonesia has threatened to impose a state of emergency Friday if Parliament does not halt the looming 5)impeachment 4 proceedings 5. 6)Legislators are seeking to remove Mr. Wahid for 7)alleged corruption 6 and incompetence 7, charges the president denies.
But, late Wednesday, he added a twist. Mr. Wahid 8)reiterated his threat to make the declaration on Friday, if no 9)compromise is reached, but said it would not take effect until July 31st, one day before Parliament is scheduled to 10)initiate the impeachment. Mr. Wahid said that gives 11 additional days to reach agreement.
Closed-door meetings continued to see if some negotiated settlement could be reached. The discussions are believed to center around a deal that would give most of Mr. Wahid's executive powers to his Vice-President Megawati Sukarnoputri, but leave him in a largely ceremonial role.
Parliamentary speaker Amien Rais, a staunch Wahid opponent, told Reuters television it is too late to reach any deal that will save Mr. Wahid's presidency 8. Mr. Wahid's latest 11)pronouncement has struck many here as an admission from the president that he has no strong cards left to play. Political analysts 9 tell VOA they believe Mr. Wahid must realize he has little, if any, political support left.
The army has said it would not 12)enforce any state of emergency. The national police force is less united, but support for Mr. Wahid there is still thin.
