3. A man was shot to death by police in Manhattan after he became belligerent 3 as he tried to buy beer in a grocery store. The man pulled out an 8-inch knife that he refused to drop. It was not clear whether he has a mental illness or a criminal record.
4. French police took to the streets in about 60 cities across France to denounce the hatred 4 and violence they say is being directed to death, during a year daily protesting against labor 5 reform. In Paris, counter-protesters set fire to a police car in a nearby street.
