Indonesian leaders appear ready for a 1)showdown next week. President Abdurrahman Wahid has repeated his threat to declare a state of emergency next Friday - if Parliament refuses to abort 2 2)impeachment 4 plans. But lawmakers say if the president moves against them, they will immediately 3)convene to consider removing him from power. President Wahid says lawmakers now have until 1800 GMT next Friday to halt plans to remove him from office or else he will declare a state of civil emergency.
President Wahid has made that 4)threat before. But his comments at a school in West Java mark the first time the president has specified 5 an hour for his July 20 deadline. Lawmakers meanwhile are showing no sign of backing down. National Assembly speaker Amien Rais denounced the threat. He said lawmakers are ready to go into a special session within hours of an emergency declaration by the president. Mr. Rais called on the 700 members of the People's 5)Consultative Assembly not to leave the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, in case a special session is called.
Despite the president's repeated threats, it is not clear whether he has support within any sector 6 of government. Senior police and military leaders have made clear they will not 6)enforce a state of emergency or martial 7 law. Mr. Wahid's vice 8 president and possible 7)successor says impeachment hearings are inevitable 9. And a series of government shake-ups since June has done little to 8)engender political loyalty 10 to the president.
To 9)underscore the president's increasingly isolated 11 position, dozens of police surrounded the home of Indonesia's ousted 12 national police chief and another senior official Thursday night in 10)defiance of a presidential order to have them arrested.
President Wahid and Police Chief General Suroyo Bimantoro have been 11)waging a war of wills since June, when the general was fired after he said he would not support the president's plans to 12)dissolve Parliament.
Relations between the president and lawmakers have been strained for more than six months. 13)Legislators charge the president with corruption 13 and mismanagement. They have scheduled a special session of the People's Consultative Assembly on August first to impeach 3 the president.
Mr. Wahid denies any wrongdoing and has been cleared of corruption 14)allegations by Indonesia's attorney-general. He maintains legislative 14 efforts to remove from office are illegal.
