Afghan Refugees Face Increasing Hostility

There are at least four-million 1)refugees from Afghanistan spread out around the world, more than from any other country. Officials at the U.N. refugee agency are concerned about growing 2)hostility to the refugees in many countries.
The U.N. refugee agency says as conditions continue to deteriorate 1 in Afghanistan, many Afghan refugees are being forced to seek 3)asylum 2 in far away countries because the countries nearer to home are less and less willing to accept them. UNHCR Spokesman Rupert Colville says last year, Afghans applied 3 for asylum in at least 68-countries around the world. He says the number of Afghans seeking asylum in Europe has almost doubled in two-years.
Last year, Mr. Colville says 34,000 applied for asylum. But he says not many countries welcome them. "Unfortunately, when they arrive in the richer industrialized countries, Afghans, along with other asylum seekers, face an ever-increasing 4)barricade of exclusionary 4 measures," he say. They also face an "increasingly hostile environment where all asylum seekers as a group, including ones like Afghans, which contain a large number of refugees, are 5)stigmatized as 6)bogus and as basically a group of unwanted people."
Mr. Colville says the six countries bordering Afghanistan have all closed their borders to the refugees. And he says there are reports of Afghan refugees being 7)deported from both Pakistan and Iran. "In Iran, a strict new law forbidding employers to use foreign labor 5 has resulted in thousands of Afghans losing their jobs. I would stress that not all of these are necessarily refugees, but some of them certainly would be," he says. "But perhaps even more alarming is that this appears to have 8)unleashed a wave of violence against Afghan refugees in Iran. And UNHCR has received a number of reports of physical attacks against Afghans in various parts of the country."
Despite the terrible conditions in Afghanistan, Mr. Colville says many of the refugees would be willing to return to areas where there is no fighting. But he says international 9)donors are even showing 10)reluctance to fund 11)repatriation programs.
