India’s lower house of parliament has passed a much awaited anti-rape 1 law. It comes after a huge public outcry over the treatment of women in the country, triggered by the rape and murder of a student in New Delhi.

The "Criminal Laws Bill" includes stringent 2 punishments for rape and other sexual crimes. Rapists will be given up to 20 years in prison, with the possibility of death sentences in extreme cases.
