The United Nations marked the 30th 1)anniversary of its Volunteer Program Monday with a record number of participants.

The program, which began in 1971, sends volunteers with specific areas of expertise 1 to nations all over the world. They may work with U.N. 2)peacekeeping operations, development projects or in direct human services, including education and healthcare.

Last year, there were almost 5,000 people from 157 nations active in the program.

Sharon Capeling-Alakija, executive coordinator 2 of the U.N. Volunteers, says the program is not one of 3)donor and 4)recipient countries, that about 65 percent of last year's volunteers came from developing nations. She told reporters that the largest single contingent 3 of U.N. volunteers is now in East Timor.

"It is the largest operation we have ever been involved in in the history of the organization," he said. "As we speak, there are almost 900 United Nations volunteers from almost 100 countries who are working together, building toward the elections and, of course, helping 4 to build a new, independent nation."

Ms. Capeling-Alakija says there is a growing need for volunteers with expertise in information technologies, because the effective use of technology is often critical to economic development.

U.N. volunteers do not receive a formal salary, but they are granted basic living 5)expenses, a monthly 6)allowance and transportation costs. Complete information on the U.N. Volunteer Program can be found on the Internet at unv.org.
