Be careful - there's a fine line between confident and cocky

Jo: This is Real English from BBC Learning 1 English. I'm Jo.

Helen: And I'm Helen.

Jo: Today's word is cocky. C.O.C.K.Y. Cocky.

Helen:

Jo: Well a cocky person is someone who is very self-confident and perhaps a little arrogant 2.

Jo: It's quite an informal word used in a disapproving 3 way.

Jo: So for example, someone you work with might think they know everything really well and make you feel less important because you don't know how to do certain things.

B: Don't get too cocky – it took you two and half hours to run a half marathon!

Jo: Actually Helen, I've been studying Chinese recently and I'm getting really good.

Jo: Erm

Jo is getting a bit too cocky!

Jo: Anyway that's all from Real English. If you want to learn more words and expressions like you have today, you can find lots more on our website www.bbcchina.com.cn. See you again soon.
