 口语:“嗨,别摆架子了!”


中国有句俗语:马的架子越大越值钱,人的架子越大越卑贱。自信、傲气固然重要,但为人处世还真不敢骄横。你整天趾高气扬、好像有多了不起,想以此交朋友、求帮助?对不起,没那回事儿。 不过,既然谈到了“马”和“架子”,英语中还真有这么一匹“马”和今天的话题有关。 短语“high horse”表示“趾高气扬、自以为很了不起”,相应的,片语“to get/come (down) off your horse”指的就是:谦和一点,别摆架子了。 早在14世纪,神学家John Wyclif(约翰·威克理夫,著名《圣经》英文版翻译者)曾记载,皇室在当时举行庆典盛会时,王宫显贵必要骑着“高头大马”(high horse)招摇过市,“high horse”一时间成为“显赫”的标志。虽着时间的流逝,“马”在人们生活中的作用虽然愈来愈小,但由古代风俗沿传下来的短语“high horse”(傲慢、趾高气扬)则进入到了日常会话之中。 显然,片语“to come/get (down) off your horse”(别一副高高在上的样子)就是在“high horse”基础上衍生而来的。相应的,如果您看到“to be/get on one's high horse”或者“to ride one's high horse”则表示“趾高气扬,盛气凌人”。 看下面两个例句:I can't stand Peter. He's always on his high horse(我受不了Peter,他总是一副高高在上的样子)/ You know I'm right! Get off your high horse and admit your mistake! (既然你知道我是对的,那就放下架子承认错误吧!)
