The Ministry 1 of Environmental Protection says 31 provinces, autonomous 2 regions and municipalities have signed "responsibility pledges" to meet air pollution reduction targets by 2017. The promised cuts vary in different regions.
Reduction targets for the concentration of PM2.5 particles range from 10 percent for Inner Mongolia to 25 percent in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province. Eleven regions will be evaluated on reductions of PM2.5.
The performance of the other 20 regions will be judged on reductions PM10 particles, with targets of 5 to 15 percent. Hainan, Tibet and Yunnan, where the air quality is already much better than the national standard, have no specific target for PM10 levels as long as reductions continue.
The national government says it plans to spend 1.7 trillion yuan on air pollution control between 2013 and 2017.
