Today marks the 76th anniversary of the Nanjing massacre 1. A prayer assembly for peace is set to be held in a square outside the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall. Now let’s go live to the peace rally.

This year’s event has gathered more than 5,000 people, including residents, students, family of victims, survivors 2 of the massacre, as well as representatives from International Institute of Peace. Other memorial activities are being held in Nanjing, including press conferences and seminars. As part of this year’s event, a report on preserving of survivors’ oral histories of the atrocity 3 will be presented and a Sino-US collaborative project on oral history studies will be announced.

On December 13th, 1937, Japanese troops killed about 300-thousand Chinese civilians 4 and unarmed soldiers, after they captured the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing during the Second World War.
