A Wish
Mine be a cot beside the hill;
A bee-hive's hum shall soothe 1 my ear;
A willowy brook 2, that turns a mill,
With many a fall shall linger near.
The swallow oft beneath my thatch 3
Shall twitter from his clay-built nest;
Oft shall the pilgrim lift the latch 4
And share my meal, a welcome guest.
Around my ivied porch shall spring
Each fragrant 5 flower that drinks the dew;
And Lucy at her wheel shall sing
In russet gown and apron 6 blue.
The village church among the trees,
Where first our marriage vows 7 were given,
With merry peals 8 shall swell 9 the breeze,
And point with taper 10 spire 11 to heaven.
