This morning in Health Watch "Watching what you eat on vacation". One of the joys of traveling is eating things that you normally wouldn’t try back here at home but it's very important to make sure that all that exotic food is safe. Our doctor Emily Senay is here to explain. Good morning, Emi.

Alright. What are some of the common dangers involved when people go overseas, they start eating it at all. They wanna soak in the local culture.
Sure. Sure. Well, you know it's all about destination. If you are traveling abroad to certain locations in the Centers for Disease Control lists, what those locations might be depending on what their sanitation 1 is. You have about a 50% chance in countries where sanitation isn't what it should be of taking home souvenirs you really probably don't want, Julie......

Like viruses, hepatitis, say, bacteria, parasites 2, so you really want to be careful about how you handle the local water, the local food ah so that you have fond memories of your summer vacation.
Right, and you, and so that you are not chained to hotel room.
That's right.
What are the countries on the CDC list?
That is all on the website. The important thing is wherever you are going, you wanna think about the water. It all starts with the water. You wanna make sure that the water you are drinking is probably not the tap water and if so, it should be very thoroughly 3 boiled. Bottled water, is OK, as long as it's still, still sealed. The reason that you want it still sealed is it's not so uncommon 4 in these countries that they will actually take the water bottles and refill them with tap water and resell them. So make sure that it's sealed.
What if you go to the bar, you get a mixed drink and there is ice cubes involved?
That also is a no-no. Let me give you a list of things that are OK, ah, that to drink overseas. Of course, bottled water avoid ice. That's very important, brush your teeth with bottled water. Beverages 5 that are in bottles or cans is fine as long as they are name brand and they are sealed. Hot coffee or tea are world of caution. If they are giving you a cold drink that looks like it's in a, you know, safe can, and that drink is covered with water on the outside, chances are it's been submerged in ice and where do you think that ice has been? It is probably contaminated too. So dry the outside of it, so that you don't inadvertently, despite your best efforts contaminate yourself.
Alright, what are the dangers when it comes to solid food?
Solid food, all raw food probably should be considered contaminated until proven otherwise. So you wanna be very careful. Ah, you wanna make sure that you do not eat the raw or undercooked meat or shellfish. Salads and uncooked vegetables are a big no-no. The reason is, obviously, if they are coming out of the ground, they probably have been irrigated 6 with contaminated water and even if they have been washed they've probably been washed with contaminated water. So all vegetable should be cooked and they should be hot. Make sure it hasn't been sitting out all day. Un-pasteurized milk or cheese, you wanna avoid that as well. If you gotta have the fruit make sure that you peel it to avoid contamination.
Is there a magic pill I can take before I go overseas, so I have a stomach of steel and I don’t have to worry about this?
Well, I don't know about a magic pill there, but there are some steps you can take. You can take the pink stuff, Pepto Bismol, lot of cardiacs to that, though many people should not take it. So check with your doctor before you go. Antibiotics 7 can be prescribed beforehand. If you have a fever or bloody 8 diarrhea, avoid the anti-diarrhea medications and seek medical attention.
