Hello to you, I’m Creshon Saunders at the CNN.com news room in Atlanta. Here is a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
No major damage to report after a powerful earthquake strikes the South Pacific. The U.S. Geological Survey tracked the magnitude 6.8 quake off the coast of Indonesia Saturday morning. It’s not far from the center of a powerful earthquake that triggered a deadly tsunami 1 back in 2004. Geologists 2 say there is no threat of a tsunami from today’s earthquake.
More aseismic activity to report to you, this time in Colombia where authorities say at least 4 people are dead after an erupting volcano triggers a landslide 3. The Nevado del Huila volcano has been erupting since Thursday and has wiped out some bridges and roadways. Colombia’s president has ordered the air force to supply the cut-off towns with aid.
In Lima, Peru, President Bush is urging Asian leaders not to abandon capitalism 4. The president spoke 5 on free trade and the financial crisis today at an economic summit that could be his final trip overseas as president. Bush urged those who support free trade to push Congress to pass free trade agreements with Colombia, South Korea and Panama.
Hollywood actors may not let the show go on. Screen Actors Guild 6 executive director Doug Allan says it will authorize 7 a strike after failing to reach a contract with the major studios. Now the two sides can’t seem to agree on how actors would be paid when movies and TV shows are distributed through mobile phones or the Internet. Hollywood is still recovering from the 100-day writers strike just a year ago.
Alright, you got to check this out, a 3-month layover of source for a Japanese tourist in a Mexico City airport. Hiroshi Nohara has made the terminal a temporary home for nearly 90 days. He says he doesn’t know why he’s staying, but he says he doesn’t have plans to leave either. Now Nohara is living off donations from airport eateries and has become a favorite in the Mexican media. Officials say they can’t kick him out because his visa is valid 8 until March.
