CNN has confirmed more than 600 homes have been destroyed in the Los Angeles area by a fast-moving wildfire and more than 10,000 people are being ordered to evacuate 1. Fire officials say people in Selma and Porter Ranch 2 as well as Granada Hills must get out now. The Los Angeles mayor is asking residents to conserve 3 power or rolling blackouts may be required to prevent a strain on the power grid 4.
To the West, in Santa Barbara another wildfire has burned more than a hundred homes. The fire has consumed more than 2,600 acres and injured 4 fire fighters since it started.
Supporters of same-sex marriage will hold several rallies as part of a series of nationwide protest against Proposition 8 which denies same-sex couples the right to wed 5 in California. The rallies may be taking place today, but the court battle heats up Monday. Only Connecticut and Massachusetts allow same-sex marriages. New Jersey 6, Vermont and New Hampshire have civil unions.
Working to fix the global financial crisis, 20 world leaders are meeting right now in Washington. President Bush called the emergency summit to figure out what caused the global financial meltdown and how to make sure it doesn't happen again.
North Carolina Governor Mike Easley is planning to survey damage caused by a cluster of strong thunderstorms that swept across Central North Carolina and killed 2 people. One victim was found dead in the wreckage 7 of her house in the community of Kenly. The second fatality 8 was a child happened in the neighboring community of Johnston County. Officials say that the severe storm affected 9 a half-dozen counties, knocking down trees and power lines.
The U.S. military said the suicide car bombing has killed 10 Iraqis and wounded 20 others. The blast was at an automobile 10 market in the city of Tal Afar about 70 Kilometers west of Mosul.
