[00:11.08]Conversation 1

[00:14.24]Heilo.Is that Sarah?

[00:18.39]Yes,Hi.How are you? I'm fine. What about you? You weren't in class today.

[00:27.45]I'm just phoning to make sure you're OK.

[00:31.82]Oh,thanks.That's realy nice of you.

[00:36.96]I'm not very well,Actually.Oh No.What's the problem?

[00:43.44]I've got a really bad cole. I've been in bed all day.

[00:49.61]Oh No!I'm sorry.Have you been to see anyone about it?

[00:56.08]NO,I'll be all right.I just need to stay in bed for a while.

[01:03.53]I already feel a bit better than I did this morning.

[01:08.49]Conversation 2

[01:12.25]Heilo.Hi,Janet.It's Teresa.How's it going?

[01:19.91]Great,thanks.How are you? Not very well, actually.

[01:26.47]That's why I'm phoning.

[01:30.12]Can you tell ralph I can't come to class tonight?

[01:36.08]Yes,of course.What's the problem?

[01:40.52]Oh,I've just got a really upset stomach.

[01:46.89]I've been in and out of the bathroom all day.

[01:52.22]Oh No,that's awful! I'm sorry.Can I do anything to help?

[01:58.57]That's really kind of you,but I'm all right.

[02:03.53]I'll be fine tomorrow.

[02:02.53]Have you taken anything for it?

[02:06.29]No,I'm just drinking lots of water and trying to take it easy.

[02:13.87]Rlght that sounds sensible 1.

[02:17.71]Listen,I've got to go.

[02:21.86]Yes,of course.I'll phone you tomorrow and see how you are.

[02:27.92]OK.Thanks.bye.

[02:32.18]James phillips is sleeping.

[02:45.14]He fell asleep quite suddenly in the middle of our interview.

[02:51.09]Normally,I would feel angry if someone did this to me.

[02:56.87]I would think'How rude!Am I boring you?',

[03:02.33]but with James I just feel sorry for him

[03:07.58]because James is suffering from narcolepsy.

[03:12.33]Narcolepsy is a medical condition which makes people feel tired all the time.

[03:20.38]When you suffer from it,

[03:24.14]you can't stop yourself from sleeping and when you fall asleep,

[03:30.07]it is almost impossible to wake you up.

[03:34.80]I tried to wake James up by shouting at him and ringing a loud bell,

[03:41.96]but he just continued sleeping.

[03:46.40]His wife,Michelle, told me he would probably sleep for an hour or more.

[03:53.16]Usualy he sleeps between 16 and 20 hours a day.

[03:59.93]What makes it worse is the fact he often has terrible nightmares 2 while he sleeps.

[04:07.19]For a long time, nobody realised James was ill.

[04:13.54]When he was younger,James often overslept in the morning

[04:19.41]and was late for school although he didn't usually sleep at school.

[04:25.37]He often couldn't do his homework

[04:30.12]because he usually went to bed at five or six in the evening.

[04:36.19]His teachers just thought he was lazy and he often got bad grades.

[04:43.32]After leaving school, his illness got worse.

[04:49.06]He lost several jobs because he was always late

[04:54.42]or he was found asleep at his desk.

[04:58.68]Then,one day,he fell asleep while he was driving.

[05:04.84]He crashed into a wall and broke his arm.

[05:10.20]He was lucky he didn't kill himself.

[05:14.85]He finally went to the doctor to ask for help.

[05:20.78]He was told he had narcolepsy. That was ten years ago.

[05:27.15]Unfotunately,there is no cure for the condition

[05:33.32]and doctors aren't even sure what causes it.

[05:38.07]At first,James was given some drugs which helped him to stay awake longer.

[05:45.02]As a result,he went back to school and he got very good grades.

[05:51.29]The school gave him extra time when he fell asleep during his exams

[05:57.64]so that he could finish.

[06:01.00]He can't work full-time,but he has a part-time job as a computer technician 3.

[06:09.76]Five years ago,he met his wife, Michelle,

[06:15.40]when they were both doing a computing 4 course.

[06:19.84]Michelle says,'He's a really good-looking guy,

[06:26.29]so I was surprised he didn't already have a girlfriend.

[06:31.54]Then I found out why!

[06:35.70]He didn't actually come to the first three dates we arranged 5 because

[06:42.25]he was sleeping.

[06:45.60]I wasn't going to give him another chance,

[06:50.35]but then he explained his problem

[06:54.61]and how the narcolepsy is worse whn he is very nervous-for example,

[07:01.87]when going out with a beautiful girl for the first time!

[07:07.15]I couldn't say no after that,could I?

[07:12.19]He's intelligent,he's got a great sense of humour 6

[07:18.25]and he's basically 7 a normal guy

[07:22.32]it's just that he can't do certain things like drive or have baths or

[07:29.27]travel on his own because he can fall asleep at any moment.

[07:35.33]It's all right,though,

[07:38.81]because I'm not the kind of person who likes to go out very late, anyway.

[07:45.16]I'm a bit shy.I like to spend time on my own,so we're a good match.

[07:53.10]'So don't you ever get fed up with his sleeping?'I ask her.

[08:00.54]'No,not really,"she replied,'although the other week,

[08:08.20]we went out for dinner to celebrate our third wedding anniversary 8.

[08:14.05]It was a really lovely restaurant. It was really romantic 9.

[08:21.13]We ordered our meal and I just went to the loo for a moment.

[08:27.08]When I came back,I found him asleep with his face lying in a plate of salad.

[08:34.24]I was a bit fed up then,I must say,

[08:39.20]but then the food was fantastic and he woke up in time for the dessert,

[08:45.55]so it wasn't that bad!"

[08:49.10]2  While you listen

[09:00.15]Conversation 3

[09:04.28]All right.How's it going?

[09:09.24]Yes,fine.Are you OK?

[09:13.29]Yes,not too bad.Did you have a nice weekend?

[09:18.65]Yes,all right.I just stayed in and took it easy.

[09:23.61]What about you?I spent most of it in bed.

[09:29.07]I was feeling really ill,to be honest.

[09:33.33]Why? Did you have a cold or something?

[09:37.48]No,no.I went to new fish restaurant in town and I think I ate something bad.

[09:45.42]I don't know, but I was up all Friday night, being sick.

[09:51.30]Oh no! That sounds awful.

[09:55.85]Yes,it wasn't very nice,but I'm feeling a lot better now.

[10:01.72]Conversation 4

[10:06.69]Good morning.Do you mind if I join you?

[10:11.55]No,of course not.Have a seat.

[10:16.90]Did you sleep well?

[10:20.66]Yes,very.What about you?

[10:25.42]No,I didn't,actually.I was up till two watching film on TV,

[10:32.26]and then I got woken up by the people in the room next to me at about five.

[10:38.82]Did you hear them?

[10:41.87]No,I didn't.

[10:46.03]You must be a really heavy sleeper,then,

[10:50.39]because they were making a terrible noise.

[10:54.75]it was unbelievable!Anyway,I couldn't get back to sleep for ages.

[11:01.23]Honestly,I'm exhausted 10.

[11:05.98]Maybe you should've stayed in bed and not come down for breakfast.

[11:12.04]Yes,maybe,but I need to eat in the mornings.

[11:17.09]And anyway,I have paid for it.

[11:21.34]Conversation 5

[11:26.39]Hello?Is that Barbara?

[11:30.62]Yes,Angus!How are you? It's been ages.SO what's you been doing recently?

[11:39.87]Yes,I know.I'm sorry.I've just been really busy with exams and studying.

[11:45.82]What about you?Yes,everything's great.

[11:51.46]I'm in a really good mood at the moment, actually.

[11:56.14]Oh yes?Why?

[11:59.20]Well,I haven't really told many people yet,but I'm pregnant 11.

[12:06.33]Wow!That's brilliant! You must be really happy.

[12:11.29]Yes,I'm really pleased.I really wnted to tell people before,

[12:17.46]but I had to have a scan 12 and check everything was all right first.

[12:22.81]And is it?

[12:25.87]Yes,yes.I had the scan yesterday and it's fine.

[12:30.83]Wow!So when's it due 13? September 15th.

[12:36.29]Really?So you're,what, almost three months pregnant already?

[12:42.04]Yes.So do you know what it is yet?

[12:46.61]No,I din't want to know.I'm just going to wait.

[12:52.07]Well,anyway,that's brilliant.Congratulations 14!Thanks.

[12:57.34]Anyway,listen,sorry.I've got to go or I'll be late for my art class.
