[00:23.93]I belong to that classification of people known as wives,I am A Wife. ;

[00:30.48]And,not altogether incidentally. I am a mother. ;

[00:35.75]Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene ;

[00:40.52]fresh from a recent divorce. ;

[00:42.42]He had one child, who is,of course, with his ex-wife. ;

[00:46.13]He is obviously looking for another wife. ;

[00:48.93]As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, ;

[00:52.06]it suddenly occurred to me that I,too, would like to have a wife. ;

[00:58.04]I would like to go back to school ;

[01:00.76]so that I can become economically independent, ;

[01:03.72]support myself,and, if need be,support those dependent upon me. ;

[01:08.75]I want a wife who will work and send me to school. ;

[01:12.46]And while I am going to school I want a wife to take care of my children. ;

[01:16.68]I want a wife to keep track of the children's doctor and dentist appointments. ;

[06:09.16]All about me.I'm twelve years old. ;

[06:14.29]I'm large for my age and have big feet which I am self-conscious about. ;

[06:23.03]I have fair hair and blue eyes like my dad, ;

[06:25.83]and a mouth and expression like my mum. ;

[08:09.48]In my other class it was getting all stodgy and still and lumpy and rusty. ;

[13:27.70]You and your family have been living in the same six-family apartment ;

[13:31.88]building for eight years. ;

[13:33.69]The landlord's family also lives there,and,generally speaking, ;

[13:38.04]all the tenants get along fairly well with each other. ;

[13:40.89]Recently,however, there was a change in the apartment next to yours. ;

[13:45.31]A nice,quiet old couple used to live there. ;

[13:48.63]The old lady would sometimes bring over some cookies or small cakes she had made, ;

[13:52.90]and your mother in return would give them some food or ;

[16:33.34]At one of the stops, a young man in his early twenties gets on the train ;

[16:38.14]and sits down next to a middle-aged woman reading a book. ;

[16:45.17]After a few minutes,he eaches into his pocket for a cigarette nd lights up. ;

[16:50.01]There are signs on the subway which prohibit smoking. ;

[16:54.47]People usually obey the signs, ;

[16:56.82]since it is both dangerous and inconsiderate not to. ;

[17:00.31]The woman turns to the man and very politely says, ;

[17:04.68]"Excuse me,sir, but you aren't supposed to smoke on the subway." ;

[17:15.65]but people don't usually smoke on the subway." ;

[17:23.58]The woman closes her book,very calmly stands up, ;

[18:26.17] Seeing the World     Text A ;

[18:31.06]If someone offered to pay all my expenses for a month's holiday anywhere in the world. ;

[18:36.86]I would feel very surprised and very excited. ;

[18:39.94]It would be difficult to decide where I wanted to go. ;

[18:43.22]Should I go to one place or to lots of different places? ;

[18:46.97]If I went to one country,I could see and understand a lot about it. ;

[18:51.39]If I went to lots of countries, ;

[18:53.34]my holiday would be more interesting and more exciting. ;

[18:56.33]I think I would decide to fly around the world ;

[18:59.18]and to visit three different countries. ;

[19:01.69]The countries I would visit would be Australia, ;

[19:04.87]the United States of America and Kenya. ;

[19:08.91]If I went to Australia,I would stay there for about two weeks. ;

[19:38.11]because he majored in Aboriginal Studies at Queens-land University. ;

[19:42.81]While I was visiting Australia. ;

[19:45.04]I hope I could also see some of the large cities, ;

[19:47.85]such as Sydney and Melbourne. ;

[19:50.41]If I went to the United States,I would stay there about a week. ;

[19:56.16]I expect I would start by visiting New York. ;

[19:59.15]I have heard that New York is a very exciting city. ;

[20:02.33]I imagine that there are lots of tourist attractions, ;

[20:05.27]that the buildings are spectacular and that the food is very varied. ;

[20:09.55]After I had stayed two or three days in New York,I would fly to San Francisco. ;

[20:14.48]I hope I could stay with my relations who live there ;

[20:17.38]and I would visit the city and other parts of California. ;

[20:21.28]Finally,I would fly to Kenya where I would stay for about a week. ;

[20:26.26]There are three things I would like to do in Kenya. ;

[20:29.06]First,I hope I could visit the coast ;

[20:31.44]because I would like to see the old Arab cities and enjoy the beautiful beaches. ;

[20:35.95]Next,I would like to  visit a Game Reserve. ;

[20:38.89]I imagine the wild animals of Africa-- the lion, ;

[20:41.74]elephant and hippopotamus-- are very exciting and beautiful. ;

[20:45.63]Finally,I would like to visit the Mountains of Kenya ;

[20:48.77]where you can see snow on the Equator. ;

[20:51.43]If someone offered me this money,I would be amazed. ;

[20:56.41]Unfortunately,I do not think this will ever happen ;

[21:07.43]Ann started work last summer,so she didn't have a holiday. ;

[21:12.80]She saved as much as she could and, in January, ;

[21:16.21]she booked a package trip to Rosa, in Spain. ;

[21:19.59]She left London airport early on the morning of the first Saturday in August. ;

[21:24.29]She was very excited,as this was her first trip abroad. ;

[21:28.51]During the flight they had a snack, ;

[21:30.89]and when they arrived at Barcelona airport, ;

[21:33.31]a special bus was ready to take them to their hotel in Rosas. ;

[21:37.01]The weather was beautiful and Ann enjoyed the bus trip. ;

[21:43.38]and then went to her room to change before dinner. ;

[21:46.22]She was just ready to go downstairs, ;

[21:48.93]when she found that her Spanish money wasn't in her handbag. ;

[22:06.26]She had very few pesetas,and she would be here for two weeks. ;

[23:25.32]There are several ways you can find out about the countries ;

[23:29.00]and places you wish to visit. ;

[23:30.83]You can talk to friends who have travelled to the places. ;

[23:33.80]Or you can go and see a colour film about them. ;

[23:36.41]Or you can read travel books. ;

[23:39.02]It would seem that there are three kinds of travel books. ;

[23:42.68]The first are those that give a personal, ;

[23:45.11]subjective account of travels which the author has actually made himself. ;

[23:49.40]If they are informative and have a good index ;

[23:52.14]then they can be useful to you when you are planning your travels. ;

[23:55.45]The second kind are those books whose purpose is to give ;

[23:59.04]a purely objective description of things to be done and seen. ;

[24:02.93]If a well-read, ;

[24:04.07]cultured person has written such a book then it is even more useful. ;

[24:08.15]It can be classified as a selective guide book. ;

[24:12.14]The third kind are those books which are called 'a guide' ;

[24:16.04]to some place or other. If they are good, they will, ;

[24:19.73]in addition to their factual information, ;

[24:21.77]give an analysis or an interpretation. ;
