For some of Peruvians who live near the Andes,life depends on the snow that's usually on top of mountains.There just one problem these days,no snow.R.L. looks for unique idea that try to solve the problem that basically boils down to fake it.
High in Peruvian Andes where is so dry and cold that very little vegetation grows.Life depends on one animal:the alpaca.But in recent years,raising alpaca has become a greater challenge.Mountains that used to be covered with ice around the town of Licapa,are now barren.
Shepherds like S.P. says that no ice means no water,and no water means no grass to feed the animals.G. is the founder 1 of Peru Glaciers,the organisations' goal is to bring the ice back to the Mountains. G.'s idea is very simple:If dark mountains absorb more heat for the sun,white mountain will have opposite effect.The solution is to make them white.
And infrared 2 thermometer shows that quit a difference temperature between the white and dark rocks.A crew of five goes around the mountain,splashing a mixture that turns rock white.The misture is not paint but a combination of water,sand and lime.And it seems to be working.G finds ice and** between the rocks something the local say it wasn't there before.So far the crew has covered an area roughly 500,000 square meters,almost the size of 3 football fields. Still to small to G's goal in long term.His goal is to cover 3 billion square meters which would be much more than 500,000 football fields.For that,he'd need about1.5 billion dollars fullfilled over 5 years.
