Kicking off with a couple international stories today on CNN Student News. I\'m Carl Azuz. Welcome to the show.

Diplomats 1 from around the world are gathering 2 in Geneva, Switzerland but their focus is on the country in the Middle East.  Since 2011, Syria has been torn apart by a civil war. More than 100,000 people have been killed and more than one half a million Syrians have become refugees. They have to leave their homes. The international meeting in Geneva is try to find solutions but officials aren\'t expecting a break through. For one thing, the US wants the other countries to help restore peace in Syria. Syrian officials said this is a Syrian conflict and it needs to stay that way, like the civil war itself, it\'s complicated and why is this meeting happening in Switzerland anyway?

Shaky hope for Syria\'s peace on the stable and neutral ground of Geneva. The Swiss city is known as the world\'s negotiating table where a brute 3 force and battles won\'t give any ground. The international status of the city s. after WWI as the seat to the ill fated league of nations. Then again, after the WWII in 1945, housing key departments of the newly established united nations. One reason, Switzerland\'s fame neutrality that allows Geneva to be a dispassionate arbitrator. The city, also named drop in famous Geneva conventions, the standard the Switch play out international rules to human treatment in war time.

\"The Geneva conventions and all of that instruments of international humanitarian 5 law must be scrupulously 6 respected.\"
