[00:01.94]Randy Pausch Inspires Graduates

[00:06.37]I am glad to be here today, Hell,

[00:10.80]I am glad to be anywhere today.

[00:12.62]President Cohon asked me to come

[00:15.25]and give the charge to the graduates. I assure you,

[00:18.32]it's nothing compared to the charge you have just given me.

[00:21.04]Last August I was told that in all likelihood

[00:24.22]I had three to six months left to live.

[00:26.70]I am on month nine now and I am not to get down

[00:29.80]and do any push-ups...But there will be

[00:32.38]a short pick-up basketball game later.

[00:34.47]Somebody said to me,"in light of those numbers,

[00:37.76]wow, so you are really beating the Grim Reaper 1."

[00:40.88]And what I said without even thinking about is that

[00:44.84]we don't beat the Reaper by living longer.

[00:47.22]We beat the Reaper by living well, and living fully 2.

[00:50.60]For the Reaper will come for all of us,

[00:52.87]the question is what we do between the time

[00:57.35]we were born and the time he shows up.

[00:58.58]Because when he shows up it is too late to do all the things

[01:02.04]that you're always gonna kind of “get round to”.

[01:04.52]So I think the only advice I can give you on

[01:07.58]how to live your life well is, first off, remember,

[01:11.30]it's a cliché, but I love clichés,

[01:14.90]“it is not the things we do in life

[01:17.01]that we regret on our deathbed, it is the things we do not”.

[01:20.70]The second thing that I would add to that,

[01:22.81]and I didn't coordinate 3 on the subject of this word

[01:25.09]but I think it's the right word that comes up, is passion.

[01:28.76]And you will need to find your passion.

[01:31.96]Many of you have already done it, many of you will later,

[01:36.36]many of you may take till your 30s or 40s.

[01:38.74]But don't give up on finding it. Alright?

[01:41.20]Because then all you're doing is waiting for the Reaper.

[01:44.79]Find your passion and follow it.

[01:47.10]And if there's anything I have learned in my life,

[01:49.87]you will not find that passion in things.

[01:52.68]And you will not find that passion in money.

[01:55.29]Because the more things and the more money you have,

[01:57.84]the more you will just look around and use that as the metric,

[02:01.39]and there will always be someone with more.

[02:03.20]Find you passion and in my experience,

[02:06.67]no matter what you do at work or what you do in official settings,

[02:09.76]that passion would be grounded in people.

[02:12.67]And it would be grounded in the relationships

[02:15.26]you have with people, and what they think of you,

[02:17.52]when your time comes. And if you can gain

[02:20.46]the respect of those around you,

[02:22.00]and the passion and true love, and I've said this before,

[02:25.48]but I waited till 39 to get married

[02:28.16]because I had to wait that long to find someone

[02:30.05]where her happiness was more important than mine.

[02:32.82]And if nothing else I hope that all of you can find

[02:35.86]that kind of passion and that kind of love in your life.

[02:38.92]Thank you!
