[00:00.47]Mirror, Mirror—What do I See

[00:03.18]A loving person lives in a loving world.

[00:07.88]A hostile person lives in a hostile world.

[00:11.49]Everyone you meet is your mirror.

[00:14.77]Mirrors have a very particular function.

[00:17.40] They reflect the image in front of them.

[00:19.80] Just as a physical mirror serves as the vehicle to reflection,

[00:23.52] so do all of the people in our lives.

[00:26.80]When we see something beautiful such as a flower garden,

[00:30.19]that garden serves as a reflection.

[00:32.81]In order to see the beauty in front of us,

[00:35.33]we must be able to see the beauty inside of ourselves.

[00:39.27]When we love someone, it's a reflection of loving ourselves.

[00:43.53]We have often heard things like

[00:45.61]"I love how I am when I'm with that person."

[00:49.22]That simply translates into "I'm able to love me

[00:53.26] when I love that other person."

[00:55.67]Oftentimes, when we meet someone new,

[00:58.52] we feel as though we "click".

[01:00.37]Sometimes it's as if we've known each other for a long time.

[01:04.31] That feeling can come from sharing similarities.

[01:07.71]Just as the "mirror" or other person can be a positive reflection,

[01:12.19]it is more likely that we'll notice it

[01:14.30]when it has a negative connotation.

[01:16.71] For example, it's easy to remember times

[01:19.33]when we have met someone we're not particularly crazy about.

[01:22.72]We may have some criticism in our mind about the person.

[01:26.11] This is especially true

[01:27.64]when we get to know someone with whom we would rather spend less time.

[01:31.69]Frequently, when we dislike qualities in other people,

[01:35.30] ironically, it's usually the mirror that's speaking to us.

[01:39.04]I began questioning myself further each time I encountered someone

[01:43.08] that I didn't particularly like.

[01:45.27]Each time, I asked myself,

[01:47.09]"What is it about that person that I don't like?" and then

[01:51.47] "Is there something similar in me?" in every instance,

[01:55.08]I could see a piece of that quality in me,

[01:57.70]and sometimes I had to really get very introspective.

[02:01.75] So what did that mean?

[02:03.71]It means that just as I can get annoyed or disturbed

[02:07.21] when I notice that aspect in someone else,

[02:09.62] I better reexamine my qualities and consider making some changes.

[02:14.43] Even if I'm not willing to make a drastic 1 change,

[02:17.28]at least I consider how I might modify some of the things that I'm doing.

[02:22.20]At times we meet someone new and feel distant,

[02:26.14] disconnected, or disgusted.

[02:27.99] Although we don't want to believe it,

[02:29.77]and it's not easy or desirable to look further,

[02:32.62]it can be a great learning lesson to figure out

[02:35.35]what part of the person is being reflected in you.

[02:39.18] It's simply just another way to create more self-awareness.
