2. 重复或进一步解释的内容可以略读
文章作者为了把某个问题讲解透彻，往往采用多种表达方式来重复自己的观点，或者给自己的论点加上了许多引申的内容。这里的“多种表达方式”可能是使用冒号或that is, namely来进一步阐释。基于考试的角度，我们完全没有必要去欣赏文章作者的文采飞扬，不同表达手法的构思精妙，而是只读观点，理解含义。如果一句话和上文是同样一个意思，或是对上文的引申叙述，考生应大胆略读。
例3 If that were an examination topic, most students would tear it apart, offering a long list of complaints: from local smog（烟雾）to global climate change, from the felling（砍伐）of forests to the extinction 1 of species. (2002.1 CET6 Passage Two)
译文：如果这是一道考试题，大多数学生会将它驳斥得体无完肤，然后列举出一大堆不满：从局部的烟雾到全球气候变化，从森林砍伐到物种灭绝。
例4 Indeed, if people lived, consumed and produced things in the same way as they did in 1900 (or 1950, or indeed 1980), the world by now would be a pretty disgusting place: smelly, dirty, toxic 2 and dangerous. (2002.1 CET6 Passage Two)
译文：的确，如果人们是按照1900年（或50年代，甚至80年代）的方式生活、消费和进行生产的话，现在世界会是一个非常令人作呕的地方：又脏又臭，充满了有毒物和危险。
例5 There were various views about what constitutes it, but there was agreement that such an essence exists —— that is to say, that there is something by virtue 3 of which man is man. (2003.12 CET6 Passage Three)
译文：关于人性的构成，人们说法不一，但有一点大家意见是一致的，即人的本质确实存在。也就是说，人之所以成为人是因为有了它。
- The plant is now in danger of extinction.这种植物现在有绝种的危险。
- The island's way of life is doomed to extinction.这个岛上的生活方式注定要消失。
